In this guide, you’ll learn how to search Internet Archive for public domain books.
1. Go to Internet Archive Search
2. In the search field enter the following text and click “Go”
licenseurl:*publicdomain* AND Ernest Hemingway
The “AND” tells the search engine all the items returned should have that license AND they should contain the word “Ernest Hemingway.” Please note that “AND” has to be in all caps.
Tip: If you want to open the exact search query as in the example above, click this link with Internet Archive Search Query for Public Domain Books.
3. In the “Media Type” filter select “texts”
4. In the “Creator” filter select “ernest hemingway”
5. In the “Language” filter select “English”
This is how you search Internet Archive for public domain books. This method showed me several results, including The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961).
