“My religion is kindness,” the Dalai Lama is said to have said. These words remind me that the movement of the heart as we practice kindness mirrors the movement of the heart when we let go of conditioned views about ourselves and others. Every person has been conditioned to think and behave in a certain way, and it’s important that we don’t confuse those conditioned mind patterns with who they really are. When we pronounce righteous judgment and form an opinion of someone, that false identity becomes a prison not only for the other person but also for ourselves. One of the best ways to break free of this mental habit is to start your day with lovingkindness meditation, but it doesn’t have to stop there. To enhance your practice, you can also Try a Little Kindness toward people you meet on the street as you go about your day. And this is what Glen Campbell‘s song is all about. Enjoy!
TRY A LITTLE KINDNESS
by Glen CampbellIf you see your brother standing by the road
With a heavy load from the seeds he’s sowed
And if you see your sister falling by the way
Just stop and say “You’re going the wrong way”You got to try a little kindness, yes show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness then you’ll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streetsDon’t walk around the down and out
Lend a helping hand instead of doubt
And the kindness that you show every day
Will help someone along their wayYou got to try a little kindness, yes show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness, then you’ll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streetsYou got to try a little kindness, yes show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness then you’ll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets
