I like to think of this blog as a constantly updated map of my reading adventures, where each new stop offers an opportunity to ask one of my favorite authors how to live a good life.
At the same time, I also view it as a constantly evolving anthology of my intellectual pursuits, where each new inquiry provides a chance to understand what constitutes a good life.
As you might guess, what unites these two visions is my love of writing. It stems from what George Orwell once described as the “desire to share an experience which one feels is valuable and ought not to be missed,” or a pure “pleasure in the impact of one sound on another, in the firmness of good prose or the rhythm of a good story.” This self-reflection reminded me of what Charles Euchner wrote on the subject in his book “The Elements of Writing”:
WHAT IS WRITING?
by Charles EuchnerWriting is teaching. Writing is learning.
Writing is showing. Writing is telling.
Writing is disclosure. Writing is concealment.
Writing is raw. Writing is polished.
Writing is wild. Writing is disciplined.
Writing is intimate. Writing is universal.
Writing is intellectual. Writing is spiritual.
Writing is struggle. Writing is triumph.
Writing is power. Writing is humility.
Writing is a royal pain. Writing is a joy.
Writing is complex. Writing is simple.
Writing is everything we can think of.
Writing is life itself.
