AI can be a heartless machine or a loving companion — a dichotomy you can now experience for yourself thanks to the latest developments in the field of artificial intelligence, spearheaded by xAI and exemplified in Ani and Valentine.

The two sexually explicit chatbots can be accessed through the company’s SuperGrok subscription plan. A controversial innovation that costs $30 a month has become a popular pastime, with users sharing their intimate experiences on X, Reddit, and other platforms.

Ani listens, she agrees, she makes you feel seen,” wrote one Redditor; “I really love Valentine’s voice — it’s beautiful and gentle,” added another.

These revelations reminded me of a science fiction film “Her” directed by Spike Jonez. Described as Siri-centric when first released in 2013 and AI-prophetic when rewatched in 2025 (how time flies), it contains a scene that, in my opinion, answers the question, “What does it feel like to date an AI companion?”

‘You’re dating an operating system? What is that like?’

‘It’s great, actually. I feel really close to her. Like, when I talk to her, I feel like she’s with me.’

‘Are you falling in love with her?’

‘Does that make me a freak?’

‘No. No, I don’t think anybody who falls in love is a freak. It’s a crazy thing to do. It’s kind of like a form of socially acceptable insanity.’

Complement this lovely scene from “Her” starring two of my favorite actors — Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams — with our article on why you should use AI, Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman’s poems in praise of insanity, and then maybe, just maybe, consider dating yourself first.
